Die BMI (Broadcast Music Incorporated), eine der drei Verwertungsgesellschaften der USA macht sich auch um die Filmmusik bemüht. So verleiht sie jedes Jahr einen Preis an die Komponisten der kommerziell erfolgreichsten Filme und Fernsehproduktionen. Daher dürfte dieser Preis bei einigen Komponisten im Regal stehen. Welcher Preis aber nur bei wenigen steht, ist der Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement, der Preis für herausragende Lebensleistung. Dieses Jahr ging dieser Preis an Rachel Portman, die damit – wie schon so oft in ihrer Karriere – die erste Frau ist, die diesen Preis entgegennehmen durfte.
Ein weiterer Spezialpreis ging an Terence Blanchard, der Classic Contribution Award.
