Text des Veranstalters auf Englisch:

The 1st Madrid Film Music Festival, “Soncinemad”, was a cultural innovation which was born out the idea to gather in Spain’s capital soundtrack lovers from around the world for the three-days it lasted, congregating everyone under our common and shared passion for an aspect so little explored, but as vigorously brilliant as film music.

During the dates of June the 30th and July the 1st, 2006, Madrid witnessed an event defined by a unique and extraordinary whole of specialized critics, reviewers, agents, P.R managers and people of the film music industry along with devoted fans, all gathered, joined and driven under special musical performances, master classes and seminars by renowned composers and area professionals.

The events were led by the impressive symphonic concerts which took place in the Teatro Monumental (Monumental Theatre) with famous film music composers Trevor Jones (The Last of the Mohicans, Dark Crystal) conducting the prestigious Orchestra and Choir of RTVE, and Harry Gregson Williams (The Chronicles of Narnia, Kingdom of Heaven), leading the Chamartin Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

Along with these symphonic spectacles, the Festival was completed and elevated by specially constructed and informative Master classes-Conferences which elevated people’s interest as they were held by famous composes such as Oscar Winner Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, Gladiator, The Da Vinci Code), Dario Marianelli (Pride and Prejudice, V for Vendetta), Christopher Young (Murder in the First, Spiderman 3), Nick Glennie Smith (The Rock, The Man in the Iron Mask), Roque Baños (Alatriste, The Machinist), Lucio Godoy (Intact, Mondays to the Sun), Toumas Kantelinen (Mindhunters), Jim Dooley (When a Stranger Calls) or Rupert Gregson Williams (Over the Hedge).

The whole festival was introduced by Don Fernando Lara, General Director of the Spanish Institute of Arts Sciences and Music and the “Maestro” Antón García Abril. Monica Zierhut (Vice-president of Walt Disney Music), Bob Badami (Musical Supervisor), and Gilles Tinayre (President of the UCMF) were also part of our diverse special guests’ list.

The Organizing Committee also attributed special care and emphasis on the multicultural character of Soncinemad, as fans around the world attended Madrid for an unforgettable weekend, introducing themselves to the Spanish way of thinking and living while returning back home after having gained an amazingly rich experience, built by the Soncinemad’s magical events and the city’s charming character. People from the entire world, Europe (Germany, England, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, Holland, France, Luxembourg, Poland, Greece, Cyprus, Sweden, Norway, Finland), South America (Brazil, Chile, Argentina), Russia, Israel and the United States, South Africa, Canada and Australia were staying and enjoying the intense and vivid colours of our capital’s life. Along them were numerous Spanish fans, totalling a whole of 4000 people who attended the festival overall.

The bases for Soncinemad 2007 haven been long established and are currently very solid. With the experience gained from our first year, the Organizing Committee works hard and with numerous accoutrements for the involution of both the artistic and audio-visual sides of the Festival’s productions, aspects that make this hybrid work, i.e. the combination of teaching and knowledge-gain through seminars and conferences with leisure and entertainment through the differently proposed musical activities. The 2nd Madrid Film music Festival, “Soncinemad 2007”, aims for a recap and a further development of the great success of the first year so we can renew the bond we established and the trust our public, film music critics, reviewers and area professionals showed us last year through theor support and further, to obtain a high level of citizenship involvement by specially emphasizing on support coming from the public institutions.

With the experience gained from our first year and the success of Soncinemad 2006, the Organizing Committee is armed with humbleness but also confidence for this journey to the complex fusion of the artistic side of music with the modern and technologically advanced audio-visual spectacles that make up what is our festival. Our committee is equipped with the experience and energy required to further develop Soncinemad, the mixture of knowledge-based activities such as teaching, seminars and conferences with clearly artistic and musical-oriented events, primarily in the form of symphonic concerts.

Soncinemad will once again embrace Madrid with the magical and awe-inspiring veil of film music’s beauty and elegance, offering a strong and vitally important cultural alternate to our beloved city and its people, empowering therefore and enhancing Madrid’s constant effort of being established as one the most culturally diverse and artistically rich European cities. Our constant dream is a place where the music of cinema coexists with and enfolds all the different types and tendencies of musical expression with always stressing that the brilliant Seventh Art that is the world of Cinema, owes many aspects of its currently prestigious and impressively high level to the evocative powers of film music; music which has a very crucial role and a strong nature. This very music is the central core of Soncinemad and it’s what will essentially bring all of us together once again. The brilliance of film music is what will finally be delivered in its finest form by the true stars of Soncinemad.

Soncinemad is an international celebration of the entire world’s cinema; from America to Europe and from the East to Asia, the festival’s aim is the gathering of all those different cultures’ brilliant film music and the diffusion of their values in our very own grounds, in Spain.

Last year’s attendants, and especially our composers and area professionals, were left with great impressions from our very first effort and this is something which has greatly helped and elevated the general image of the Festival. The most important goal for us thought is that all our guests and composers should feel Madrid like their own home. Provided that the city will once again be bosomed by the magical virtues of cinema and its music we hope that every one of our supporters and guests will be one step closer to the feeling of absolute ease and enjoyment in our Land’s hospitality. The leisure and pleasure of film music’s beauty has up to this point been generally deprived by our citizenship; this is the time to create the chance for this cultural alternative and new form of entertainment.

This year, Soncinemad’s apex point will be the outstanding presence of the well-respected and beloved American composer, Alan Silvestri. The winner of numerous international prizes as well as Academy Award nominee, is particularly known for his collaborations with celebrated director Robert Zemeckis, with whom Alan has formed one of the most solid and amazingly firm composer-director relationships in the history of the cinema; a relationship which resulted in some brilliant and memorable works like Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Forrest Gump and Polar Express.

Silvestri will lead a world-exclusive symphonic concert for full orchestra and choir with a repertoire which covers wide selection from his best and most notable works to date. Silvestri will be accompanied and completed by some of the most prestigious and active film music composers of our times who will incarnate all of our particularly interesting and varicoloured musical activities scheduled for Soncinemad II like conferences and seminaries crucially important for our professional vision and the form of the festival.

Soncinemad 2007 will also honour the presence of our high-profile guest composers with an extraordinary, rare and special film music concert. A film music tribute under which original pieces will be performed bearing special arrangments for the occasion by our very guests. The concert will be specially introduced by our Honorary President of Soncinemad 2007, Mr.Christopher Young, who has just finished the recordings of Spiderman 3 and the highly praised and enjoyed Ghost Rider. The concert will include a wide variety of guest composers who will conduct their own works and whose names will soon be announced.

So, come join us in this diverse and authentic celebration of film music.

Right in the heart of the summer, film music’s pulse is vividly beating in Madrid. See you there!
